Ex Transnet employee finally gets pension benefits

06 August 2021

A Gauteng man and former Transnet employee, whose 4-year employment with the state rail, port and pipeline company was terminated in March 2018, was relieved to receive pension benefits to the tune of more than R100 000, 00 after an enduring 24-month wait for the pay-out.

The man approached Public Protector in March 2020, alleging that he submitted the required forms to the Transnet Retirement Fund two months after termination of service to set the processing of his claim in motion.

Upon enquiring with Momentum Retirement Administrators, the man was informed that his claim had been processed and that all the funds due to him were transferred or paid to the Fund.

It emerged that the Fund failed to communicate to the man the information that gave rise to the delay in processing and finalising his claim. The information in question related to the Fund’s incorrect capturing of the figures involved.

The man was eventually paid R84 728, 71 plus R19 477 in interest five months after the Public Protector got involved in the matter. He confirmed to the Public Protector that the money was paid into his bank account.
