Public Protector roadshow goes to Mpumalanga
The Public Protector South Africa’s (PPSA) penultimate engagement with provincial government authorities as part of the independent constitutional institution’s Stakeholder Roadshow for 2021/22 will take place in Mbombela, Mpumalanga next week.
Since mid-February, Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Deputy Public Protector Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka have travelled far and wide to engage Premiers and Members of Executive Councils, Speakers of Provincial Legislatures, senior officials and Houses of Traditional and KhoiSan Leaders. To date, they have been to Free State, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Western Cape, Limpopo and Gauteng.
On Monday, Adv. Mkhwebane and Adv. Gcaleka will meet with Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Hon. Makhosazane Masilela, Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane and her executive and take them through the state of governance in the province as told through PPSA investigations — both pending and concluded. This will be after prior engagement with the House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders. Later in the day, Adv. Mkhwebane and Adv. Gcaleka will conduct an inspection in loco in Kaboweni village outside Neslpruit, where locals have complained about poor road infrastructure and inadequate water supply.
Inkosi Khumalo of the Gutshwa Traditional Council, Mayors, Speakers and Accounting Officers of the Ehlanzeni District and Mbombela Local Municipalities will be on hand to shed light on the reasons for the service delivery problems. The roadshow is a flagship outreach programme in terms of which the institution engages parties interested in its work in fulfilment of its constitutional mandate to investigate, report on and remedy alleged or suspected improper conduct in all state affairs and to be accessible to all persons and communities.
Through the programme, the PPSA seeks to strengthen ties and foster collaboration and cooperation between itself and organs of state including provincial legislatures, government departments, municipalities and traditional authorities, with a view to promoting quality service delivery and good governance in state affairs.
