Public Protector kicks-off nationwide stakeholder engagements in Gauteng

Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane will on Thursday, 16 February 2017, kickstart her nationwide stakeholder engagements with a meeting with members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in Johannesburg.

The consultation with members of legislature will be succeeded by a meeting on Friday that will see Adv. Mkhwebane and her team interacting with the community of Rathanda and surrounding areas in Heidelberg.

Explaining the purpose of the meetings, which are expected to last four months, Adv. Mkhwebane said she sought to communicate her vision to stakeholders, increase access and solicit views on what stakeholders expected from the office.

She explained that the engagements would present an opportunity for an unmediated engagement on issues pertaining to the work of her office and other matters of concern.

“Some of you have been outspoken on all platforms; during phone-in programmes on radio, social media and other channels. You voiced your apparent frustrations with us while others were being supportive,” Adv. Mkhwebane said.

“This road show presents an opportunity for you to engage us directly. I urge you to bring your concerns and suggestions to our attention so that, together, we may find ways of ensuring that this office lives up to its constitutional mandate and works for you.”

Since her assumption of duty, Adv. Mkhwebane has constantly emphasised the need to ensure that the services of her office were availed to ordinary people living in far-flung areas while not neglecting her office’s corruption-busting mandate.

She will be spending at least two days in each province meeting with stakeholders ranging from Premiers, Members of Executive Councils, Members of the Provincial Legislatures, Head of Departments, Municipal officials, Political Parties and general members of the public.

The meetings are held under the theme “Broadening Access: Taking the Public Protector to the grassroots”.
