Public Protector kicks-off Good Governance Week

In efforts to promote good governance and integrity in all state affairs, Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela will launch the Public Protector Good Governance Week, an inaugural campaign that will become an annual event. Scheduled to take place between 11 and 15 October 2010, the Week coincides with the 15th anniversary of Public Protector South Africa as a constitutional institution.

The aim of the campaign is to highlight the need for good governance practices to reign supreme across the public sector and also raise awareness about the existence and the role the Public Protector in pursuit of the constitutional mandate to be accessible to all persons and communities.

The Week will be characterised by a series of activities across the country including a launch in Mamelodi and a three-day high level conference on good governance, organised jointly by the Public Protector in collaboration with the Commonwealth. The conference will seek to highlight the role of oversight institutions and the need for such institutions to work together. There will also be an unannounced visit to a government service point.

Over and above these, there will be a hive of activity in provinces as Public Protector staff will be visiting taxi ranks, schools, churches and other public points to spread the message of good governance, while educating the public about the Public Protector’s services and role.

The Week will be observed under the theme: Celebrating 15 years of promoting accountable governance and responsiveness in the public sector
