Public Protector concludes nationwide Stakeholder Roadshow in the Eastern Cape
Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Deputy Public Protector Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka will on Friday conclude their month-long, countrywide Stakeholder Roadshow when they meet the Eastern Cape provincial heads of the legislative and executive arms of government, and the House of Traditional and Khoi-San leaders in Bisho.
Adv. Mkhwebane and Adv. Gcaleka will hold talks with Speaker of the Provincial Legislature Hon. Helen Mercedes Sauls-August, Premier Oscar Mabuyane, Members of the Executive Council and Members of the Traditional and Khoi-San leaders led by Nkosi Langa Mavuso at the legislature’s Raymond Mhlaba chamber.
Discussions will centre on the state of governance in the province as told through the Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) investigations — both pending and concluded, and the related issues of cooperation and compliance with investigations and remedial action. Also under discussion will be the role of traditional leaders in municipal council meetings.
Later in the afternoon, Adv. Mkhwebane and Adv. Gcaleka will inspect the Lesseyton/ Ndlovukazi Stadium in Komani in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality. The PPSA provincial office in Bisho is investigating alleged procurement irregularities relating to the construction of the sports field.
The roadshow is a flagship outreach programme in terms of which the institution engages parties interested in its work in fulfilment of its constitutional mandate to investigate, report on and remedy alleged or suspected improper conduct in all state affairs and to be accessible to all persons and communities.
Through the programme, the PPSA seeks to strengthen ties and foster collaboration and cooperation between itself and organs of state including provincial legislatures, government departments, municipalities and traditional authorities, with a view to promoting quality service delivery and good governance in state affairs. It has been to all other provinces. The Eastern Cape is the last.
