Public Protector and Gauteng Legislature Petition Committee to establish a working relationship

Public Protector South Africa and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Petition Committee are considering a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two oversight bodies.

This came after the meeting to understand each others roles between the Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela and the Chairperson of the committee Mr Jacob Khawe and Deputy Chairperson Ms Refilwe Ndzuta in Pretoria on Monday.

The main issue discussed was the role the Public Protector could play in terms of the Section (7) of the Gauteng Petitions Act. This Act provides for referral of matters to the Public Protector by the Gauteng Petitions Committee.

The two institutions also discussed matters that they are both currently investigating. Theses included the Midvaal complainants who lost their homes through the donation scheme of the Midvaal Municipality, municipality billing disputes in the City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, Department of Public Works and RDP housing maladies.

Speaking at the same meeting the Public Protector said the MOU will enable both institutions to collaborate on areas of outreach, referrals and sharing of information on issues of investigations.

The meeting was also attended by senior and executive managers from various Public Protector branches.
The Public Protector commended the committee for initiating the meeting and urged the oversight bodies to come together and rationalize their resources to avoid being competitive.
