Public Protector’s office briefs Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Alexandra findings, addresses gender events in Gauteng and Northern Cape

 
Deputy Public Protector Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka will on Thursday afternoon brief the Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and Human Settlements Portfolio Committee on the Public Protector’s findings following an investigation into the service delivery issues that led to the violent service delivery protests in Alexandra township in 2019.
 
The investigation was conducted jointly with sister Chapter 9 institution, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), with the Public Protector focusing on maladministration while the SAHRC concentrated on human rights violations. The two institution revealed their respective findings during a joint media briefings in July 2021.
 
The Public Protector’s aspect of the investigation uncovered a myriad of service delivery problems including poor housing, overflowing manholes, blocked drains, poor lighting, uncollected refuse and filth along walkways and communal toilets shared by up to seven families, among other issues.
Early on the same day, both Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Adv. Gcaleka will address two other events on gender issues in Gauteng and Northern Cape, respectively.
 
Adv. Mkhwebane will address a Gender-Based Violence and Mental Health Awareness Day at Tshwane North TVET College: Temba Campus in Hammanskraal north of Pretoria while Adv. Gcaleka will deliver a keynote address at the Northern Cape Provincial Government’s Dialogue on Gender Dynamics in the Public Service.
 
The briefing of the CoGTA and Human Settlements Portfolio Committee will take place as follows:
