President Zuma to open the Good Governance Conference
President Jacob Zuma will deliver the keynote address on the opening day of the high level conference on good governance, organised by the Public Protector in collaboration with the Commonwealth and South African oversight agencies on Tuesday, 12 October 2010. The conference will take place from 12 to 14 October 2010 at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria, starting at 9:00 on each day.
The conference brings together oversight institutions mandated by the constitution to strengthen democracy, other oversight agencies on good governance and the non-governmental organisations with focused interest on good governance and democracy.
The main aim is to dialogue and emerge with a common understanding on good governance and come out with a framework for coordination and collaboration among oversight agencies to effectively promote good governance.
The conference also seeks to provide a platform for dialogue on the roles and functions of democratic and oversight institutions in the promotion of good governance and service delivery.
It is expected that at the end of the conference, there will be a common understanding of governance in the country; a framework to facilitate inter-agency coordination and collaboration; and increased knowledge and understanding of the scope and functions of the oversight institutions in strengthening good governance, among other things.
Other speakers billed to address the conference are Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Advisor on Good Governance Dr Roger Koranteng and Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela.
