Dlamini Zuma to open Public Protector Good Governance Conference

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will deliver a keynote address to mark the start of a two-day, high level Public Protector Good Governance Conference in Pretoria on Monday.

Supported by the German Federal Development Agency, GIZ, the conference will be held under the theme: “Strengthening Synergies & Leadership in Ensuring Public Accountability”. A gala dinner to be addressed by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene, will take place on the night of the first day of the conference.

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development Luwellyn Landers and the Co-Chairperson of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests Buoang Mashile are some of the other dignitaries billed to speak at the conference.

The conference forms part of a host of activities characterising the second chapter of the annual Public Protector Good Governance Week, which is observed every October on the anniversary of the 16-year-old constitutional institution. The Week aims to enhance access to Public Protector services and promote good governance in the conduct of all state affairs.

Others activities include a launch at Marabastad Taxi Rank in Pretoria, which will take place hours ahead of the conference. It will see the Public Protector interacting with early morning commuters just before 07:00.

There will also be a series of outreach activities including stop shops at shopping malls, unannounced visits at government service points, interaction with traditional leaders and a public lecture to be addressed by the Public Protector at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Soshanguve Campus on Wednesday.

Similar events such as visits to institutions of higher learning, schools, shopping plazas, government service points and good governance workshops, will take place across all provinces.

The Good Governance Conference will be held as follows:

Date: 17-18 October 2011
Time: 09:H00 – 16:00
Venue: CSIR Convention Centre, Pretoria

The gala dinner will take place shortly after 17:00 on 17 October 2011 at the same venue.
