Adv. Madonsela presents draft Public Protector Rules to Parliament
Public Protector Adv. Madonsela on Tuesday appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development to present the draft Public Protector Rules, developed in terms of the Public Protector Act.
The presentation of the draft rules was meant to solicit Parliament’s inputs on the rules.
Once promulgated, the rules will determine the process and procedure for lodging complaints with the Public Protector, including timeframes for the resolution thereof.
The rules create uniformity, simplify and clarify, expedite and ensure the integrity of the process. They will assist the lodging of complaints and compliance with remedial action, Adv. Madonsela told the Members of Parliament.
The rules will also help educate the public about the mandate and role of the Public Protector and how it can be accessed.
The meeting agreed that the Public Protector will work with her team to incorporate the inputs and come back to the Committee for further engagements on the revised draft rules.
The Chairperson Mr L Landers reiterated that the Public Protector did not need the permission of the Committee to have the rules but she has expressed her need for the Committee’s blessings.
